Week 6, Term 3 Newsletter

25th August 2023

Kia ora Clive whānau,

What a difference a few weeks of sun makes. It has been wonderful to see our tamariki out and about enjoying the most of our beautiful Hawkes Bay weather and the opportunities that have present themselves. Fingers crossed the sun remains as we head into Cross Country next week and our Senior School camps the following.

Please be aware that during the week of the 4th - 8th September (camp week) we will have alternative cover for road patrol. We will always have staff members there assisting our students, however those that take on the role will be selected from our Year 5 group whilst our Year 6's are away at camp. As always with children (and adults) we need to be prepared for mistakes to occur. Your patience and support is greatly appreciated.

You will see our Senior School toilet block and accessible toilet is nearing completion. Due to material shortages, weather events and other hold ups this has been a long project. We thank you for your patience and understanding as our school was reduced to one access-way. The exciting news is we are nearly there! We hope to have the final Council code of compliance inspection next week. Once the building is signed off we will open all access-ways to the school and our bike racks will once again go to the bottom driveway.

As always, if you have any questions about your child's education please do not hesitate to contact any of our team. We are here to help.

Noho ora mai

Board of Trustees (BOT) Elections:

The past few years Board of Trustees election cycles were disrupted due to the COVID 19 restrictions and the impacts that these had on schools. Whilst we have only recently held our triennial election at the end of 2022, we are now needing to hold our Mid-Term election to get our cycles back on track.

Our Board of Trustees are the governors of our school. They play a vital part in deciding how our school is governed along with its strategic direction.

Our BOT has a constitution to have five elected parent representatives on the Board along with a staff rep and the principal. At the up coming mid-term election we have two parent elect seats available for election.

What makes the perfect Board?

Our Board of Trustees needs to reflect our community. Ideally we would have a mix of female and male trustees, a broad cross section of ethnicities, iwi representation, occupations and skillsets.

It is not a hard job. What we need is good people, that can look at problems in a different way and make decisions that are best for all students.

Jo Waitoa, has been elected as our returning officer for the 2023 mid-term elections. She will be sending out further information shortly to all parents/caregivers of enrolled students at our school.

Give it some thought. If you would like to know more about the Board and the role they play, feel free to make contact with me and I will have one of our current parent representatives make contact with you to discuss further.

Middle and Senior School 9:30am -Children will walk to Fardon Park
10am - Races will be run, starting with the Year 3 races in numerical order through to the Year 6 races.

Junior School races 2:00 - 3:00pm @ Clive School, starting with New Entrant girls and boys, Year One girls then boys, Year Two girls then boys. Due to building works, our course this year is slightly different. We still suggest wearing shoes is best to protect our tamariki's feet.

Cross country is about doing your best. We ask that every child participate to the best of their ability. We will all be out there supporting every runner to do their very best, from the runner who comes in first, to the last across the line.

After all the definition of success is different for everyone.
Middle School Artist in Residence:
Our middle school children have been extremely fortunate to be working with Scarlett and Rockie's dad Brad Donovan on a mural project for our school.
Brad is a professional artist who has generously donated his time and expertise to work with our students on two murals that will grace the sides of the new toilet block. He has also worked with Room 9 on drawing techniques.
We thank Brad for all his amazing mahi with our tamariki and look forward to installing the murals around our school once they are completed.
Winter Sports Season

Our winter sports seasons are coming to an end. Once again our community has made a huge effort to support our tamariki to play in the selected sports. A massive thank you to all our coaches along with our staff Sandra Cornelius and Becky Koch who organise all the sports for our school (as well as shouldering some of the coaching responsibilities).

Without our volunteer parents and staff we would never be able to offer as many sports as our students participate in. Thank you to everyone who has assisted over the course of the season!

With the end of the season, also comes prize giving. A huge congratulations to the following students who were identified in either their school teams, or club teams for their efforts through the season.

Unison Work Ethic and Fair Play:
Ashleigh, Erin and Alayna for Netball

Jackson - Most outstanding player of the season along with the undefeated title for the Clive Rugby Club.

Carter - All round excellence (under 10's Clive Rugby Club)

Elijah - Player of the year (Clive Rugby club)

Ivan - Perseverance award - Clive Rugby club

Ivy - Unison sports award for discipline, work ethic and fair play

If your child has received an award for their club or school team, please send them to the office with this so we can celebrate their achievements in our future newsletters.

Beginning of Year 2024 Out of Zone Enrolments

The Board invites applications from those who reside outside our school zone to enrol their children at Clive School during Terms One and Two of the 2024 school year to submit an application.

Those wishing to apply for an out of Zone child to start later in 2024 may also apply now for the process to be held later in the 2024 school year (August/September).

Enrolment is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available on our website and from the school office, along with application forms (phone 06 870 0538 or admin@clive.school.nz)

The deadline for receipt of applications for out of zone children is Monday 18th September 2023.

Parents of students in our zone should also let us know of students due to arrive at school as this helps us with our planning for the years ahead.

The Board has determined that THIRTY FIVE (35) places are to be available for out of zone children for the start of the 2024 school year. Details may be found on our website www.cliveschool.co.nz/enrolment/

If the number of out-of-zone applications exceeds places, students will be selected by ballot. If required this will be held on Tuesday 19th September.

Parents will be informed of the outcome by Thursday 21st September 2023.

If you would like to book an appointment to visit our school we would love to show you what Clive has to offer: 06 870 0538
